First things first: thank you for serving as a grassroots leader and aiming to build community for, and with, other writers. This year, we ended our practice of allowing community spaces that our staff has no involvement in to bear the NaNoWriMo name. We believe that transparency in community ownership and moderation are necessary, and that writers need to know when they are interacting with an unofficial group vs. staff of our organization.
We first want to note that NaNoWriMo has a writing group feature (under My NaNoWriMo on your navigation) and that you can always start a private writing group for yourself and Wrimos who you know. If you're over 18 and looking to meet new writers and start a special interest group (e.g., Romantasy Writers, Burners of the Midnight Oil, etc.) you can always post to our Facebook group (or search previous posts) to meet other Wrimos who might want to join you or who might invite you to join a group housed on NaNoWriMo.org.
If you wish to create an outside space for your fellow writers to convene, we recommend coming up with your own name, possibly one that signals to others that you are doing NaNoWriMo without using our trademarked name (e.g., Romantasy Wrimos, November Night Oil Burners, etc.)
If you feel strongly about using the NaNoWriMo name in the name of your sub-community, you would have to 1) gain new written approval from us (previous written approval no longer applies), 2) specify everywhere that the space you are creating is unofficial, and 3) comply with a much longer authorization and maintenance process. Please reach out to our help desk with any further questions!
