No.
There is no exchange of user information between NaNoWriMo and our sponsors. Please refer to our Privacy Policy for information about data collected by NaNoWriMo and details on how it is used.
With respect to this specific question, language in our privacy policy states that, "NaNoWriMo will not share any of your information with outside third parties, unless it is necessary for safety or legal purposes." We consider sponsors to be outside third parties.
If anything, we have strengthened our privacy practices under a new strategic direction we discussed in our May 2024 open letter to our community, entitled Changes at NaNoWriMo. Part of revamping our volunteer programs includes placing stronger controls on user information that can be accessed by volunteers.
When the NaNoWriMo Board investigated moderation complaints in November of 2023, it found that moderator and volunteer access to user information was overly available, which was doubly problematic because volunteers had never been asked to provide their legal identities or undergo background checks. Though our pausing of volunteer programs in order to implement them properly has caused some heartburn within our community, we believe that user privacy is an area where we are improving.
